Lefkonos 2-12, 1011 Nicosia

The Primary School of Sia is one of the 25 school buildings selected by the European project PEDIA (Promoting Energy efficiency & Developing Innovative Approaches in schools) to upgrade their energy efficiency to the level of a Nearly Zero Energy Building (NZEB).

Through the Cohesion Policy Programme, “THALYA 2021-2027”, and the project “Creating Zero Energy Schools", the construction part of the energy upgrade was co-financed, while the part related to technical support was financed by the PEDIA project, of the European Union's PDA (Project Development Assistance) program, Horizon 2020.

External partners:

  • Study Safety & Health Coordinator: YNB Consulting Ltd

Challenges identified during on-site technical visits:

  • Very low energy efficiency of existing installations
  • Old-style windows and doors with single glazing
  • Non-thermal comfort for school building users
  • Increased operating costs for energy needs
  • Lack of thermal insulation of walls and ceilings
  • Inadequate control of natural ventilation
  • Rising damp & Humidity on ceilings
  • Older energy-intensive types of lighting

Energy interventions required for the building in question:

  • Replacement of existing frames (new thermally insulated windows and doors)
  • Replacement of existing lighting with new LED fixtures
  • Damage/moisture repair and surface painting works
  • Replacement of existing ventilators
  • Roof insulation and waterproofing
  • Plantings – Nature-based Solutions
  • Shell thermal insulation

Benefits from the energy upgrade of this building:

  • Reduced energy consumption (electricity and heating oil)
  • Improved indoor air quality
  • School becomes a place of experiential education
  • The school is an example of a sustainable school
  • Thermal comfort in indoor spaces
  • Enhanced shading by plantings

Actual results after upgrading the building in question:

  • 54% energy savings
  • 55% CO2 emissions savings

TESTIMONIALS & TESTIMONIALS FROM BUILDING USERS

"It is now noticeable what we are saying thermal comfort in classrooms. For example, in winter, when temperatures are relatively lower, the need for continuous heating has been significantly reduced.” – Members of the school’s Faculty Association
