The Agios Dometios High School is one of the 25 school buildings selected by the European project PEDIA (Promoting Energy efficiency & Developing Innovative Approaches in schools) to upgrade their energy efficiency to the level of a Nearly Zero Energy Building (NZEB).
Through the Cohesion Policy Programme, “THALYA 2021-2027”, and the project “Creating Zero Energy Schools", the construction part of the energy upgrade was co-financed, while the part related to technical support was financed by the PEDIA project, of the European Union's PDA (Project Development Assistance) program, Horizon 2020.

Challenges identified during on-site technical visits:
- Absence of openings on both sides of the classrooms in one wing
- Very low energy efficiency of existing installations
- Old-style windows and doors with single glazing
- Non-thermal comfort for school building users
- Increased operating costs for energy needs
- Lack of thermal insulation of walls and ceilings
- Inadequate control of natural ventilation
- Rising damp & Humidity on ceilings
- Older energy-intensive types of lighting
Energy interventions required for the building in question:
- Replacement of existing frames (new thermally insulated windows and doors)
- Replacement of existing lighting with new LED fixtures
- Damage/moisture repair and surface painting works
- Creating openings for natural ventilation
- Replacement of existing ventilators
- Roof insulation and waterproofing
- Shell thermal insulation
Benefits from the energy upgrade of this building:
- Reduced energy consumption (electricity and heating oil)
- Improved indoor air quality
- School becomes a place of experiential education
- The school is an example of a sustainable school
- Thermal comfort in indoor spaces
Actual results after upgrading the building in question:
- 62% energy savings
- 62% CO2 emissions savings
