“We envision a just, inclusive, and climate-resilient Cyprus, that is governed by the principles of sustainability.”
THE CYPRUS ENERGY AGENCY
The Cyprus Energy Agency (CEA) is an independent, non-profit, and non-governmental organization, that was founded in 2009. The CEA was co-funded by the European Commission through the programme “Intelligent Energy for Europe”, and by the Cyprus Union of Communities, for its establishment and first three years of operation.
Over the years, the CEA has become an information point for the local society, providing education and vocational training. It participates in projects in partnership with local, European, and international organisations, contributing to innovation, research, and sustainable development.
The CEA enhances the role of Local Authorities in sustainable energy planning, providing technical support for developing and implementing actions to mitigate and adapt to climate change. It supports the Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy initiative, and has a vision for “a just, inclusive, and climate-resilient Cyprus, that is governed by the principles of sustainability”..
Up to today, the CEA has participated in more than 83 EU/National projects, which cover a wide range of topics, such as:
- Climate Change Mitigation & Adaptation
- Energy Efficiency
- Just Transition

The CEA has successfully coordinated a 3,4 M€-funded project (with EEA and Norway grants) on youth employment with 10 international partners. It also leads a contract for Project Development Assistance (funded by the European Commission) to be provided to the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, to trigger investments in upgrading 7,5 school buildings into Nearly Zero Energy Buildings. This project has secured funding of 25M€ from the Cohesion Policy Programme "THALIA 20-2021’’.
Since 2022, the CEA coordinates and supports XNUMX investments under the Cyprus Recovery & Resilience Plan, to promote energy transition and climate adaptation in Local Authorities, to tackle energy poverty for disabled people, and to mainstream the installation of publicly accessible EV charging stations.
Since 2024, the CEA also coordinates a European Climate Adaptation project, funded by Interreg Europe, and leads the formation of Cyprus’s first Energy Community (Tilliria Energy Community) with support from the Ministry of Energy, Commerce, and Industry.
